Place of publication:
H. G. A. Engler & K. A. E. Prantl, Nat. Pflanzenfam. 4(4):94. 1891
Comment:
Schuman's presumed basionym, Gardenia pulchella G. Don, Edinburgh Philos. J. 11:343. 1824 was a nomen subnudum, with only the descriptive statement "flowers white, throat yellow, the size of the preceding, with many other species". While this could be considered enough for valid publication, nearly all African floras do not do so. Lacking a validly published basionym, H. pulchella K. Schum. would be an illegitimate, superfluous name for H. jasminiflora DC, which was cited as a synonym.
